MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING C.C.T.
JANUARY 31ST 2011
The meeting was opened by the chairperson Mrs Joyce Shaw. About 45 people attended.
The importance of communication and support from villagers was stressed.
The project to be presented was the update and renovation of the Craster Memorial Hall. The works would be costly and grant funding would have to be applied for.
The ladies who held regular tea/coffee mornings in the hall were struggling with outdated and dangerous equipment.
Despite having to carry water up the old staircase and boil kettles on the stage, the ladies had raised over £3000 in the last few years. They were thanked for their efforts and continuing support.
Joyce and Mr Kevin Brown had attended a meeting in the Hall that morning with a local builder to query the possibility of removing the stage and building a new kitchen.
Kevin went on to explain the plans. The stage would be partially or wholly removed and a new kitchen and storage built on the same level as the present hall floor. There would be a door and serving hatch into the hall. The old back door entrance would be levelled to allow access for wheelchairs. Kevin also outlined the fact that the heating system and boiler were outdated and inefficient. The old kitchen had been deemed unfit for use by the environmental health agency a while back. What would happen to the present kitchen would depend on plans submitted. The present lobby cloakroom would possibly become a storage area. The builder declared the plans feasible and may not need planning as no external structures were affected. The villagers voted to support the plans with a majority show of hands.
Trish Flegg suggested the lobby cloakroom be considered as a wet-room or shower area that would increase the possible uses for the hall.
Michael Craster suggested including alternative energy supplies which are looked favourably on when applying for grants.
Marion Gallon asked that storage for the chairs be taken into consideration as they took up room in the hall during activities.
It was decided to seek at least 3 estimates for all works and that employing one builder to oversee the project rather than hiring individual tradesmen would be the most efficient route.
Joyce once again stressed the commitment required from this small ageing community and that although we had money from the NWL, this was ring fenced for another large project in the village.
Trish Flegg requested and was granted permission to acquire a water boiler for the tea ladies.
Michael Gibb suggested looking at past professional feasibility studies and checking for relevant information.
The issue of the asbestos was raised and the committee let it be known that they were aware of this as a potential hurdle and would seek ways to overcome this.
